China Arrival Card 2026: What You Fill In and What 3 Days Cost

ChinaMira Content Studio
Traveler with a suitcase walking through the arrivals hall at Shanghai Pudong International Airport Terminal 2, first stop on a 2026 China arrival card and 3-day budget trip

One form survives in 2026: the free China arrival card, about five minutes at the desk, the inbound health declaration retired since late 2023. What the trip costs after you clear the hall is the part nobody prices for you - so here are Shanghai's hotel, food, ticket, transport and guide rates by tier, with honest 3-day totals in CNY and USD.

You fill in one form, not two: every foreign passport holder still completes a free China arrival card at immigration, and the inbound health declaration was retired in late 2023. Once you clear the hall, the real 2026 costs begin - three mid-range days in Shanghai run about 3,600 CNY (507 USD) per person.

Here is the China arrival card and health declaration question in plain numbers. The card is one free page, roughly ten fields - name exactly as printed in your passport, passport number, nationality, date of birth, flight number, purpose of visit, length of stay, and the address of your first hotel - and it takes about five minutes. Cabin crew hand cards out about an hour before landing, and the same stack sits at a table at the head of the arrivals hall. Since 2024 the National Immigration Administration has also offered a fillable online version you can finish on the plane if the cabin has Wi-Fi. The inbound health declaration card disappeared in late 2023 and has not returned for the 2026 season; what remains is temperature screening and, if you need it, the China Customs self-reporting program. Declare cash above CNY 20,000 or USD 5,000 equivalent, and goods worth more than CNY 5,000, on the red channel.

What the first 90 minutes cost. Land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport Terminal 2 and you have two honest routes downtown. The Shanghai Maglev from Pudong International Airport Terminal 2 to Longyang Road Station covers 30.5 km in about eight minutes for 50 CNY, or 40 CNY with that day's boarding pass. A metered taxi to People's Square runs 160-240 CNY in 45-60 minutes, and Metro Line 2 costs about 8 CNY but takes roughly 80 minutes with luggage. Add a tourist eSIM or a local SIM with 10-20 GB at 100-200 CNY, and budget 250-450 CNY for arrival day before you buy a single meal.

Hotels in Shanghai, October 2026, at about 7.1 CNY to the dollar: - Hostel dorm bed in Jing'an or the old French Concession: 90-160 CNY a night - Budget private double near a Line 2 or Line 10 station: 250-400 CNY - Solid three-star within walking distance of the metro: 400-600 CNY - Four-star double near People's Square or Lujiazui: 550-800 CNY - Five-star with a river view: 1,000-2,000 CNY Two cautions. Rates roughly double during Golden Week (October 1-7) and Spring Festival, which begins on February 17 in 2026. And Shanghai's four-star rooms run 10-15 percent above Beijing's for the same category.

Food is where Shanghai forgives a small budget: - Breakfast of shengjian bao or a jianbing: 8-20 CNY - Lunch of xiaolongbao or a noodle bowl: 20-45 CNY - Neighborhood dinner for two: 130-260 CNY - Coffee 25-40 CNY; sealed bottled water 2-5 CNY A full day of eating well lands at 130-280 CNY; add one proper dinner, a crab-and-roe plate in season, and the day reaches 400-500 CNY. Vegetarians eat easily on tofu, greens and mushrooms - ask for "bu chi rou," no meat, before you order.

Tickets, and a little history, 2026: - Yu Garden, a Ming-dynasty garden first laid out in 1559 and entered from the Huxinting Teahouse side of Anren Street: 40 CNY in high season (April-June and September-November), 30 CNY otherwise - Shanghai Museum on People's Square, whose bronze and ceramic halls are free to enter, reserved by timed slot and closed Mondays: 0 CNY - Shanghai Tower observation deck, 118th floor at 546 m: about 180 CNY - Huangpu River evening cruise: 120-150 CNY Three days of sightseeing lands at 300-500 CNY per person. Pair the free museum with Yu Garden and you buy 450 years of Chinese history for the price of a coffee and a garden ticket.

Getting around and hiring a guide, 2026: - Metro: 3-6 CNY for most city rides, with bag screening at every station entrance - DiDi ride-hailing, paid through Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card: 25-80 CNY for most city hops - High-speed rail, Shanghai to Beijing: 553 CNY in second class, about 4.5 hours, with 12306 seats opening 15 days ahead - Licensed private English-speaking guide, full day: 600-1,000 CNY - Half day: 350-500 CNY; shared small-group day tour: 250-450 CNY per person - Guide with a private car and driver, the usual setup for a water-town day: 1,100-1,800 CNY Set aside 150-250 CNY for three days of local transport, or 300-400 CNY if you lean on taxis and DiDi.

Stack it into three days for one person in Shanghai in October 2026: - Lean: 360 CNY in hostel dorm beds, 300 CNY of street food, 120 CNY of tickets and 120 CNY of metro and maglev - about 900 CNY, or 127 USD - Mid-range: 1,680 CNY in a four-star double, 630 CNY of food, 350 CNY of tickets, 200 CNY of transport and one guided day at 750 CNY - about 3,600 CNY, or 507 USD - Comfort: 4,500 CNY in a five-star room with a river view, 1,260 CNY of food, 520 CNY of tickets, 1,300 CNY for a private car and guide and 300 CNY of local transport - about 7,900 CNY, or 1,110 USD None of these totals includes international flights or the tourist visa, which runs about USD 185 all-in for the 10-year multiple-entry L visa.

Three habits keep the bill honest. Land in late April or late October, when four-star rooms sit 30-40 percent below Golden Week. Eat breakfast and lunch where office workers eat, then spend the saved money on one real dinner. Take the metro for anything more than three stops, and put arrival day at the top of the budget, because the maglev, the SIM and a late check-in are all paid before the trip properly starts. Next step: open our arrival card walkthrough to see every field before you fly, save the Pudong photo guide for the terminal's best light, then lock your Shanghai dates and reserve the museum slot and the Yu Garden ticket the week those windows open.
