Beijing Budget & Costs Guide 2026: 3 Days by Tier in CNY and USD

ChinaMira Content Studio

Beijing is not the expensive capital most first-timers brace for: the metro costs a few yuan, the Forbidden City is 60 CNY and the best skyline view in town is 2 CNY. This guide prices October 2026 by tier, from hostel to five-star, and totals three honest days in both CNY and USD.

Three days in Beijing in October 2026 costs about 3,300 CNY (465 USD) per person at the mid-range tier, sharing a four-star double, with one private guide day and a car to the Great Wall. A hostel-and-noodles version lands near 950 CNY (135 USD); a five-star version runs about 7,500 CNY (1,055 USD).

Every figure in this Beijing budget guide is for October 2026, at roughly 7.1 CNY to the US dollar, and covers one person unless it is clearly a room, a taxi or a whole duck. Three tiers run through it: lean (hostel bed, street food, metro, a shared shuttle to the wall), mid-range (four-star double, sit-down meals, one private guide day, a car to Mutianyu) and comfort (five-star room, car and driver, dinners where the bill stops mattering). International flights, shopping and alcohol sit outside all three totals, and two windows break the maths: Golden Week, 1-7 October, and the Spring Festival fortnight, when central hotel rates roughly double.

Hotels decide your tier. In the hutongs of Dongcheng and around Nanluoguxiang a hostel dorm bed costs 80-150 CNY a night and a plain private double 250-400. A solid three-star room within a five-minute walk of a Line 2 station, at Qianmen, Gulou Dajie or Yonghegong, runs 350-550; a four-star double near Wangfujing or Dongzhimen 500-800; a courtyard boutique in the lanes 600-1,200; and a five-star with a view 1,000-2,000. Position pays for itself, since three days of taxi and DiDi fares from a room an hour out of the centre costs more than the rate difference.

Food is the line that keeps Beijing costs low. A jianbing crepe from a cart costs 8-15 CNY, baozi with soy milk 10-20, zhajiangmian 22-38, and a bowl of beef noodles or a plate of dumplings 20-35. Lunch at a neighborhood restaurant with the menu on the wall runs 40-70 a person and a sit-down dinner 80-150, while a whole Peking duck at a solid mid-range house such as Siji Minfu runs 188-328 with 10-20 a head for pancakes, scallion and sweet bean sauce. A full day of eating well lands at 100-200, a lean day at 60-90. Skip the 98 CNY hotel buffet; a 15 CNY street breakfast is better.

Tickets are cheap by Western standards and the best of the city is free. The Forbidden City costs 60 CNY from April to October and 40 from November to March, closes on Mondays, and admits only pre-booked tickets checked against your passport at the Meridian Gate (Wumen), the Forbidden City's only public entrance, on its south wall. The route runs one way and spills out through the north gate into Jingshan Park, 2 CNY, where the view back down the imperial axis is the best-value photograph in China. The Temple of Heaven through-ticket is 34, the Summer Palace 30, or 60 with the gardens, the Lama Temple 25, and Mutianyu's Great Wall 45 plus 120 for the cable car round trip. The National Museum, 798 Art District and Tian'anmen Square, which needs a free reservation, cost nothing.

Getting around costs less than a coffee. Metro rides run 3-10 CNY by distance, with bag screening at every entrance; the Capital Airport Express is 25 CNY to Dongzhimen in about 25 minutes and the Daxing express 35 CNY to Caoqiao in 19. Taxis start at 13 CNY for the first 3 km, a 6 km DiDi Express ride lands at 28-45, and shared bikes cost 1.5-3 CNY per 30 minutes. For the wall, a seat on the Dongzhimen shuttle to Mutianyu is about 60 CNY each way. Out of town, Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao is 553 CNY in second class and about 4 hours 18 minutes.

Guides are where Beijing costs real money. A licensed English-speaking private guide runs 600-1,000 CNY for a full day and 350-500 for a half day, a palace or museum specialist 900-1,500, and a guide with a car and driver 1,200-1,800; a private car alone for a Mutianyu day is 500-800 return. Nobody needs a guide to eat well or ride the metro, since signage and menus in the tourist core are in English, but the fee pays for itself on day one, when the Forbidden City reads as empty courtyards without someone to place the emperors, the concubines and the eunuchs.

Here is the arithmetic behind the 3,300 CNY (465 USD) mid-range figure, per person and sharing a double: 700 for two nights in a four-star room, half of a 1,400 CNY rate; 600 for food at 200 a day; 260 for tickets including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and a Mutianyu cable car; 280 for the Airport Express, the metro and two DiDi rides; 800 for one private guide day; and 660 for a private car to the wall. Cut the guide, the car and the four-star room and the same three days fall to about 950 CNY (135 USD); trade up to a 1,500 CNY five-star room, 400 CNY dinners and a car and driver for two days and the total reaches about 7,500 CNY (1,055 USD). Book the timed Forbidden City ticket and your room first, then open our Beijing travel guide for districts and the Forbidden City history walk for the route.
