Suzhou 3-Day Itinerary 2026: Gardens, Canals and a Rain Plan

ChinaMira Content Studio
Morning mist and the first visitors at the Dongbei Street gate of the Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou, day one of a 3-day Suzhou itinerary

The three days split cleanly: gardens and the old town on day one, canal lanes and a garden night on day two, a water town or the Taihu tea hills on day three. The table below pins every fare, ticket price, meal stop and clock time, plus the one indoor day to swap in when the rain arrives.

Three days in Suzhou is the right length: one day in the old-city gardens, one along the canals and craft lanes, and one for Tongli or the Taihu tea terraces. Budget about CNY 1,200-1,600 (US$170-225) per person in October 2026, with metro fares from CNY 2 and the Humble Administrator's Garden at CNY 70-90.

This Suzhou 3-day itinerary never crosses the city twice: the walled old town sits inside the moat loop, Tiger Hill lies to the north-west, and the water towns spread east toward Kunshan. Shanghai Hongqiao trains reach Suzhou Station in 25-35 minutes for CNY 40-50 second class, or Suzhou North in 23-30 minutes for CNY 55-75. There is no Suzhou airport, so fly into Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and connect by rail. US passport holders still need a China visa for 2026 unless the trip qualifies for 240-hour visa-free transit, and Suzhou sits inside the Jiangsu area open to arrivals through Shanghai's ports.

Day 1 is the old town, starting before the shops open. Be at the Dongbei Street gate of the Humble Administrator's Garden at 07:30 when the doors open: Suzhou's largest classical garden, about 5.2 hectares of Ming-era ponds and covered galleries, and it fills by 10:00. Tickets run CNY 70-90, open 07:30-17:30. Five minutes east, I.M. Pei's free Suzhou Museum is the city's best rain shelter - closed Mondays, booked online against your passport. Lunch on a Suzhou-style noodle bowl at CNY 15-40, then follow Pingjiang Road along its canal, share a hand-rowed boat (CNY 100-150 for up to six) and let pingtan ballads drift from the teahouses. Finish on Shantang Street with osmanthus cakes at CNY 10-30.

Day 2 is gardens, crafts and performance, all inside the old town. Metro to Lingering Garden (CNY 2-4), the Qing-dynasty courtyard garden Suzhou treats as its model, at CNY 45-55 and open 07:30-17:30. Tiger Hill (CNY 60-80) is 15 minutes north-west by taxi. Work back east through Panmen Scenic Area, one of the few surviving water-and-land city gates in China (CNY 40), then let the free Kunqu Opera Museum on Zhangjia Lane explain the 600-year-old opera born here. Dinner of squirrel-shaped mandarin fish and cherry pork at Song He Lou runs CNY 100-200 for two. Cap it at the Master of the Nets Garden night session, about CNY 100 from April to October.

Day 3 leaves the walls. Tongli is about 30 km south-east: Metro Line 4 to Tongli station plus a short shuttle, and a CNY 100 day ticket covers the Tuisi Garden, the three bridges and the boat lanes. Zhouzhuang, 45 minutes by car, is lovelier at night at CNY 100. In tea season, skip both and head roughly 40 km west to Dongshan on Taihu, where the Dongting Biluochun terraces and lakeside villages fill a slow day (tastings CNY 50-100). Back in town, eat a bowl of Kunshan aozao noodles, CNY 20-45, before you leave.

The whole plan on one grid; fares are per adult in yuan and entry fees are 2026 prices.

| Day | Timing | Transport and fare | Entry fees | Meal stops | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 Old town | 07:30 garden gate; 11:00 Suzhou Museum; 15:00 Pingjiang Road; 18:30 Shantang Street | Metro CNY 2-4; taxi from Suzhou Station CNY 15-25 | Humble Administrator's Garden CNY 70-90; museum and canals free | Noodles CNY 15-40; cakes CNY 10-30; dinner CNY 60-120 | | 2 Gardens and crafts | 07:30 Lingering Garden; 10:30 Tiger Hill; 14:00 Panmen; 19:30 night garden | Metro CNY 2-4; taxi CNY 15-35 | CNY 45-55, CNY 60-80 and CNY 40; museum free; night session CNY 100 | Snacks CNY 10-30; dinner CNY 100-200 for two; teahouse CNY 30-80 | | 3 Water town or Taihu | 08:00 depart; 13:00 lunch; 18:00 back | Metro Line 4 plus shuttle CNY 10-20; car CNY 200-300 | Tongli or Zhouzhuang CNY 100; tea tasting CNY 50-100 | Aozao noodles CNY 20-45; village lunch CNY 40-80 |

Rain alternative: Suzhou logs about 125 rain days a year and a wet July drops close to 180 mm, so keep one indoor day in reserve. Keep Day 1 as written, since the classical gardens are corridors around open courts and look their best wet, then swap Day 3's water town for this indoor day: the free Suzhou Museum, the Suzhou Silk Museum, the Kunqu Opera Museum, a pingtan teahouse with a two-hour tea-and-ballads set (CNY 30-80) and the covered Grand Canal night cruise (CNY 100-120). Drop Tongli's open bridges and the Taihu terraces first, since both lose their point in flat gray light.

Money, then one booking. Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign card covers metro, gardens and boats; carry CNY 200-300 in cash for noodle shops and temple gates. Three mid-range days land near CNY 1,200-1,600 (US$170-225) per person, itemized in our China travel budget guide. Your next step: book the Humble Administrator's Garden's 07:30 timed slot and a Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou seat. Our guide to buying China high-speed rail tickets as a foreigner covers the 12306 passport booking, and our 240-hour transit page checks whether you need a visa at all. Planning more of China? The Shanghai itinerary fits on either side of this Suzhou 3-day itinerary, and the history theme page follows the gardens and the Grand Canal further back.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Suzhou?

Yes. Three days covers the old-city gardens and canals, a garden evening, and one water town or the Taihu tea terraces. Most travelers add a fourth day only to slow the pace, or to fit in Shanghai and Hangzhou as well.

How much does a 3-day Suzhou trip cost?

About CNY 1,200-1,600 (US$170-225) per person for three mid-range days: two nights in a four-star double at CNY 350-600 a night, food at CNY 120-250 a day, CNY 200-300 of tickets, and metro fares of CNY 2-8 a ride.

What is the best time to visit Suzhou?

Late March to May and late September to November give 15-25C days and the clearest light. Avoid the plum rains of mid-June to mid-July, when Suzhou can take close to 180 mm of rain in a wet month, and the July-August heat, when afternoons pass 34C.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Suzhou in 2026?

Yes. US passport holders need a Chinese visa for a normal holiday. If you arrive through Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao and continue to a third country or region within 240 hours you may qualify for visa-free transit, and Suzhou lies inside the Jiangsu area open to those travelers.

What is there to do in Suzhou on a rainy day?

Suzhou averages about 125 rain days a year. Keep the classical gardens, since their covered galleries are built for wet weather, and swap the water town for the free Suzhou Museum, the Suzhou Silk Museum, the Kunqu Opera Museum, a pingtan teahouse and the covered Grand Canal night cruise.
