Lijiang Best Time to Visit in 2026: Month-by-Month Weather, Crowds, Prices
Lijiang's calendar is really two seasons wearing twelve labels: a dry, blue-sky half from November to April and a green, wet half from June to September. Time your trip into the gaps and the same high-plateau old town hands you clear mountain views, unhurried teahouses and hot springs, plus a bed at roughly half the holiday price.
Expect dry skies, 18-24°C afternoons and old-town doubles at CNY 250-450 a night between late April and mid-May, or from mid-September to late October. July is the one month to skip: peak monsoon rain, China's school-holiday crowds and a snow mountain hidden behind cloud for days at a time.
Lijiang wears two seasons inside twelve months. From November to April the Yunnan plateau stays dry, the sky is a hard, clean blue, and days are warm while nights dip below freezing. From June to September the southwest monsoon arrives and the town takes most of its roughly 900 mm of annual rain, usually in short afternoon bursts rather than all-day drizzle. Sitting at 2,400 m, Lijiang swings 10-12°C between afternoon and night year-round, and the ultraviolet is fierce even under cloud, so a hat and a warm layer earn their place in every month.
Here is the year at a glance, using 1991-2020 climate normals from the China Meteorological Administration, plus crowd and price bands (¥ cheapest, ¥¥¥¥ dearest): January - high 13°C, low -1°C - 4 mm - quiet - ¥ February - 15°C, 1°C - 6 mm - Spring Festival spike - ¥¥ March - 18°C, 3°C - 15 mm - quiet - ¥¥ April - 20°C, 7°C - 25 mm - moderate - ¥¥ May - 23°C, 10°C - 65 mm - busy around May Day - ¥¥¥ June - 24°C, 13°C - 145 mm - busy - ¥¥¥ July - 23°C, 14°C - 205 mm - very busy - ¥¥¥¥ August - 23°C, 13°C - 190 mm - very busy - ¥¥¥¥ September - 22°C, 12°C - 135 mm - moderate - ¥¥¥ October - 20°C, 8°C - 60 mm - extreme in the first week - ¥¥¥¥ November - 17°C, 3°C - 18 mm - quiet - ¥¥ December - 13°C, 0°C - 5 mm - quiet - ¥ Read those bands as the shape of your budget rather than a fixed tariff: the same courtyard room can roughly double between a quiet November week and the opening days of October.
The month to avoid is July, and it is not a close call. It is the wettest month Lijiang has, with rain that settles in as steady grey days instead of quick showers, so the road up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is often simply lost in cloud and the old town's stone lanes stay slick underfoot. July and August are also when Chinese families travel for the school holidays, filling guesthouses and pushing rates to the top of the year. Two shorter stretches sting almost as much: Golden Week in early October, when the whole country moves at once, and the May Day break at the start of May. Spring Festival falls on 17 February in 2026 and fills the town for about a week either side of it.
The two shoulder windows are the ones worth building a trip around. April and May bring camellias and fresh green terraces before the rain locks in; late September and October carry the crispest air of the year, with the old town's tiled roofs sharp against a deep blue sky. Either window suits the slow version of Lijiang: a morning of pu'er tea in a courtyard teahouse, an afternoon on the Tea Horse Road lanes, and a hot spring soak in the hills after a day at altitude. Winter, meanwhile, is the quiet bargain, with cold mornings, brilliant light and half-empty alleys.
Two costs catch people out. The old town levies a maintenance fee of CNY 50 per person, collected at official booths by the entrances and checked when you enter paid sites such as Wangu Tower and the Mu Family Mansion; pay it there, keep the receipt with your passport and you are set. The other is Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, where the cableway up to the glacier park sells out days ahead in peak season, so reserve through the official scenic area mini-program before you leave home rather than gambling on the gate. The old town lanes themselves have no gate and no closing time, which is why an empty dawn walk is one of the best things you can do here.
Getting there is straightforward enough that the weather should decide your dates, not the transport. Lijiang Sanyi Airport sits south of the old town with an airport bus and taxis running into town, and high-speed trains from Kunming take about three hours. Book rail seats on the official 12306 app or website: sales open 15 days before departure, your passport number must match the document exactly, and the passport itself is your ticket at the gate. Flights from the United States are usually cheapest eight to twelve weeks out, and a shoulder-season guesthouse is worth reserving three to four weeks ahead.
So lock in late April to mid-May or mid-September to late October, treat July as the month to dodge, and keep one spare day in case the mountain hides. Start with our Lijiang city guide for the neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood plan, add the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain day trip, and if the altitude and the walking have earned it, finish with a hot spring soak.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Lijiang?
Late April, May, September and October are the sweet spots, with dry skies, warm afternoons and enough elbow room to enjoy the old town. October pairs the clearest mountain views of the year with the busiest opening week, so aim for the middle of the month if you can.
Does it rain a lot in Lijiang in summer?
Yes. The monsoon runs from June to September and July is the wettest month, with weeks of grey cloud and heavy afternoon rain. The showers usually pass quickly, so mornings still work for the old town and the lower trails, but the high mountain is often invisible.
How cold does Lijiang get in winter?
January nights drop just below freezing while sunny afternoons still climb to about 13°C. Bring a warm midlayer, gloves and lip balm; the old town stays walkable all day, guesthouses are at their cheapest and the light is excellent for photography.
Is Lijiang crowded during Chinese holidays?
Very. Golden Week in early October, the May Day break and Spring Festival empty the guesthouses first and the streets second, and rates jump sharply. Either book beds and rail seats a month ahead or travel in the shoulder weeks on both sides of the holiday.
How high is Lijiang, and will the altitude bother me?
The old town sits around 2,400 m and the glacier park cableway climbs to about 4,500 m, so take the first day slowly, drink more water than usual, skip alcohol for a night and save the mountain for day two or three rather than your arrival day.
