Best Time to Visit China in 2026: Month-by-Month (and 9 Scams)

Scams in China keep a calendar, and so should you. This guide pairs a month-by-month table of temperatures, rainfall, crowds and price bands with the nine tricks that peak in each season, names August and Golden Week as the windows to dodge, and shows how to pay the honest price for tickets, tea and taxis.
April to May and September to October are the best times to visit China: mild 15-25C days, clear low-rain weather, mid-range hotel prices and manageable crowds. If you have one window, take October 8-20, right after the October 1-7 National Day holiday, when a mid-range Beijing hotel drops back near CNY 500 a night.
Here is the month-by-month picture, anchored on Beijing and Shanghai; climate figures are 1991-2020 normals and price bands reflect the 2026 holiday calendar. Month | Beijing C / rain | Shanghai C / rain | Crowds | Price January | -8 to 2 / 3 mm | 2 to 8 / 74 mm | Low, then Spring Festival | Lowest February | -5 to 5 / 5 mm | 3 to 9 / 59 mm | Spring Festival peak | Highest March | 1 to 12 / 8 mm | 6 to 13 / 84 mm | Low to moderate | Low to mid April | 8 to 21 / 21 mm | 11 to 20 / 84 mm | Rising; Qingming | Mid May | 14 to 27 / 34 mm | 16 to 25 / 85 mm | Labor Day peak | Mid to high June | 19 to 30 / 78 mm | 20 to 28 / 181 mm | Moderate | Mid July | 22 to 31 / 186 mm | 26 to 32 / 146 mm | Peak summer | High August | 22 to 30 / 166 mm | 26 to 32 / 187 mm | Peak summer | Highest September | 16 to 26 / 48 mm | 22 to 28 / 88 mm | Moderate; Mid-Autumn | Mid to high October | 8 to 20 / 25 mm | 15 to 23 / 61 mm | Golden Week, then quiet | High, then falling November | 1 to 11 / 10 mm | 10 to 18 / 48 mm | Low | Low December | -6 to 3 / 2 mm | 3 to 11 / 40 mm | Low | Lowest
So which month should you avoid? August. It is hot, humid and crowded almost everywhere at once: Beijing runs 22-30C with 166 mm of rain, Shanghai 26-32C with 187 mm, the southeast coast sits inside typhoon season and room rates near their yearly peak. The worst week is the National Day holiday in early October, when the whole country travels together; the 2025 edition produced roughly 888 million domestic trips. If August is your only option, head north to Qinghai or Gansu and book early.
Spring, March to May, is the first great window. Blossoms open in Beijing and Nanjing while Yunnan's terraces turn green. The Qingming and Labor Day breaks bend the crowds, so book high-speed rail the moment seats are released and shift your dates by even two days on either side.
Summer, June to August, splits the country. The Yangtze delta drinks its plum rains, Guangzhou and Chongqing push past 35C, and July through September is typhoon season on the southeast coast. The north and the plateau are the reward: long daylight and wildflower grasslands in Qinghai and Gansu.
Autumn, September to November, earns its reputation; the honest sweet spot is the two weeks after the National Day holiday, with crisp air, golden leaves in Sichuan and Anhui and falling rates. Winter, December to February, is cheap and calm outside Spring Festival, which runs February 15-23, 2026 and stays the hardest week of the year to travel.
Every one of the nine classic tricks has a season, so your dates protect you as much as street sense. 1. Tea-house invitation: a friendly stranger, a ceremony, then a CNY 500-2,000 bill ($70-$300). Peaks in spring and autumn. 2. “It's closed today”: a driver diverts you to a jade shop. Peaks during National Day. 3. Fake art student: a gallery visit and a marked-up print. Peaks in spring near Wangfujing. 4. Scalped tickets and black guides: worst in early October. Palace Museum tickets cost CNY 60 from April 1 to October 31 and CNY 40 from November 1 to March 31, released seven days ahead at 8 p.m. Beijing time, with no same-day entry. 5. Rigged meters and airport touts: flat quotes run three to five times the meter. Worst over Spring Festival; use DiDi or the official rank. 6. Hutong rickshaws: a low quote becomes a high demand. Peaks on summer evenings; fix the total first. 7. Fake monks pressing bracelets on you. Peaks in temple season. 8. QR-code swapping: a sticker over a shop's code. Peaks on crowded weekends; check the payee name. 9. Late-night bar bills with refilled drinks and inflated totals peak on summer nights; keep receipts.
The defense is the same in every season: decline stranger invitations, book rides, trains and tickets in official apps, keep receipts, and save 12345 for complaints and 110 for emergencies before you land. G-series trains between Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao take about 4 hours 28 minutes to 6 hours, second class around CNY 553-662 (China Railway 12306, 2026 winter timetable), and the 15-day sales window opens ahead of travel, so book with your passport early. Good to know
- Best months and the month to avoid
- April-May and September-October overall; October 8-20 is the sweet spot after National Day. Avoid August for heat, rain, typhoons, crowds and peak prices, and expect the busiest week from October 1-7.
- Month-by-month climate (1991-2020 normals)
- Beijing: January -8 to 2C with 3 mm rain; April 8-21C with 21 mm; July 22-31C with 186 mm; October 8-20C with 25 mm. Shanghai: January 2-8C with 74 mm; April 11-20C with 84 mm; July 26-32C with 146 mm; October 15-23C with 61 mm.
- 2026 crowd and price bands
- National Day October 1-7 and Spring Festival February 15-23 are peak: trains and hotels sell out and room rates can double or triple. The 2025 National Day holiday drew about 888 million domestic trips (Ministry of Culture and Tourism). Cheapest: mid-November to mid-March outside Spring Festival.
- Entry rules for 2026
- The 240-hour visa-free transit policy applies at 65 ports after the November 2025 expansion, and visa-free entries made up 72.2% of foreign arrivals in Q3 2025. Several visa-free schemes now run to December 31, 2026, so check your nationality before booking.
- Tickets and rail, booked honestly
- Palace Museum: CNY 60 (April 1-October 31) or CNY 40 (November 1-March 31), released seven days ahead at 8 p.m. Beijing time, no same-day tickets, closed Mondays except public holidays. Last entry is 4 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. and the museum closes at 5 p.m. or 4:30 p.m., so visitors cannot stay after closing. G-series Beijing South-Shanghai Hongqiao: about 4h28m-6h, second class CNY 553-662 (12306, 2026 timetable).
- Scam price tags
- Tea-house bills run CNY 500-2,000 (about $70-$300) per group. Unmetered taxi quotes run three to five times the metered fare. Both peak in the high seasons above, which is why the date you pick changes how often you have to say no.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit China?
Late September to mid-November is the strongest overall window, and the two weeks after the National Day holiday ends are the quietest part of it: crisp air, golden foliage and falling room rates. April to May is the runner-up for blossoms and soft light, before the summer heat and rains arrive.
Which month should I avoid in China, and why?
Avoid August if you can. It combines peak heat and humidity, the heaviest rain in the Yangtze delta, typhoon season on the southeast coast, school-holiday crowds and the year's highest hotel prices. The National Day holiday week is the single busiest stretch, so travel just after it instead.
Is China safe for tourists in 2026?
Violent crime against visitors is rare; the realistic risk is economic, from over-friendly invitations to inflated bills and rigged meters. Decline stranger invitations, use official apps and metered ranks or DiDi, keep receipts, and save 12345 for complaints and 110 for emergencies. The UK FCDO safety advice for China covers the same ground.
When is the cheapest time to visit China?
Mid-November to mid-March, outside Spring Festival, is the cheapest stretch: Beijing and Shanghai hotels fall to their yearly low, flights soften, and major sights such as the Forbidden City stay quiet on weekdays. Harbin's ice festival is the one winter exception, when northern room rates climb.
Which tourist scams peak during Golden Week?
Scalped attraction tickets and unlicensed guides are the worst offenders during the National Day holiday, followed by the “it's closed today” taxi diversion to a jade or pearl shop and rigged meters at airport ranks. Buy tickets only through official channels, and remember the Palace Museum sells no same-day entry.
