Airport to City Photo Spots: Shanghai Maglev & Beijing Express 2026

Arrival day is a race between your luggage and the light. This guide turns the Beijing and Shanghai airport-to-city runs into a shoot: the maglev platform at Pudong, the Lujiazui ring bridge at blue hour, the Bund's open waterfront, Daxing's starfish terminal roof and the Capital Express at dusk, each with its own window, ticket, crowd rhythm and settings.
Shoot Shanghai's Pudong maglev platform 20 minutes before a blue-hour departure, then Beijing's Daxing terminal under its midday skylights. The 300 km/h maglev covers 30 km to Longyang Road in 8 minutes 10 seconds for CNY 50, so the arrival-day frame costs one ticket and one early alarm.
Shanghai's maglev is the reason to keep a camera out of your bag on arrival day. The line is fully elevated, so the cleanest frames come from the platform rather than the carriage: at Pudong, stand where the guideway runs straight at the terminal and catch the train sliding in; at Longyang Road, shoot from the upper mezzanine as it pulls away. The 431 km/h era is over, which makes panning easier and explains why older guides still quote 7 minutes 20 seconds. Buy tickets at the station ticket center on the second floor, show a same-day boarding pass for 20% off one single, and be aboard five minutes before departure; Longyang Road's first train leaves at 06:45 and Pudong's last at 21:42. Platforms are quietest between about 10:00 and 11:30 and again after 20:00. Freeze the train at 1/1000 second, or drop to 1/30 and pan for streaks; on a phone, use Pro mode near 1/500 and brace against a pillar.
Ride Metro Line 2 from Longyang Road to Lujiazui for the skyline shot. The circular pedestrian bridge sits about five and a half metres above the junction, costs nothing, and stays open from 10:00 to 22:00, wrapping a full circle around the towers so you can choose your angle. In mid-October the useful window runs roughly 17:30 to 18:10, when office lights come on while the sky still holds colour; the deck fills from about 18:00, so claim the north side early. Brace on the handrail at f/8 and ISO 100, and hold a two- to four-second exposure if you can.
Walk, or ride one more stop, to the Bund for the wide version. The riverside promenade has no gate and no closing time, so it is the one spot here where you can stay as late as the light keeps working; the Puxi bank of stone facades faces the Lujiazui towers across the water. Dawn gives empty railings and soft river haze, while 19:00 to 21:30 is shoulder to shoulder. Shoot east into the towers at blue hour, then turn 180 degrees for the lit facades; a 35mm handles both, and a phone's night mode on the railing is enough.
Beijing's Daxing International Airport is the architecture stop. Zaha Hadid Architects' 2019 terminal spreads like a starfish, one roof flowing into C-shaped columns, and its skylights pour light straight down the concourses around midday, the opposite of the usual golden-hour rule. The public halls are free to enter. Come between 10:00 and 11:30 or after 20:00 to miss the check-in banks, and shoot a 16-24mm at f/8 and ISO 400. Photograph passengers and staff only after a word.
The other Beijing frame is the ride itself. The Capital Airport Express is a flat CNY 25 and links Beixinqiao, Dongzhimen and Sanyuanqiao with Terminals 3 and 2 in about 25 to 30 minutes, running roughly every 10 minutes from 06:00 until the last city-bound train leaves Terminal 2 at 23:10. The track climbs above the ring roads, so a window seat at dusk gives layered traffic and lit towers; inside, the long carriage is a clean 1/60-second pan. There is no station at Terminal 1, where a free inter-terminal shuttle covers the gap; Terminal 3's red columns deserve 20 minutes before you board.
To reach Daxing by rail you have two vehicles, and both are worth a frame. The Daxing Airport Express runs from Caoqiao in 19 to 25 minutes for CNY 35 in standard class, every 8 to 10 minutes from 05:30 until 22:30. The high-speed train from Beijing West takes 28 to 35 minutes for CNY 24 to 30 in second class, and its station hall photographs well. Book on the official 12306 English site or app, verify your passport first, and note the presale window is 15 days including today; carry the same original passport to the gate. If you land at Hongqiao instead, the Airport Link Line reaches Pudong in 40 minutes for CNY 4 to 26, every 15 minutes, first train 05:45 and last 22:00.
Three habits tie the two cities together. Treat arrival day as a two-hour shoot rather than an all-day one, because the light decides and mid-October's blue hour is barely 40 minutes long in either city. Pack small: a 16-35mm for terminals and bridges, a 35mm for platforms, a polarizer for the river, and a cloth, since airport glass is always smudged. Ask before you include a face, and never block a fare gate for a frame; the best pictures come from standing still at the edge of the flow.
Tell ChinaMira your flight number, arrival hour and the light you want to shoot, and we will build the transfer and the photo route as one plan: the maglev window, the blue-hour bridge, a Daxing terminal slot and a 12306 booking held under your passport. Frequently asked questions
Where exactly do I stand to photograph the Shanghai maglev?
At Pudong, take the platform end nearest the tunnel mouth and shoot down the guideway as the train arrives; at Longyang Road, use the upper mezzanine as it departs. Freeze it at 1/1000 second, or pan at 1/30 for streaks, and arrive 20 minutes early for a clean railing.
When is blue hour in Shanghai and Beijing in autumn?
In mid-October the sun sets near 17:24 in Shanghai and 17:37 in Beijing, so usable blue hour runs roughly 17:30 to 18:10 and 17:45 to 18:20. The Lujiazui Skywalk and the Bund both stay open through it, so nothing hurries you out before the colour fades.
Can I take photos inside Beijing Daxing and Capital airports?
Yes in the public halls, and both are free to enter. Daxing's flowing roof and the Capital Express concourse are the easy frames; security checkpoints, immigration and staff areas are off-limits, and ask before photographing passengers or airport workers.
How do I book the high-speed train from Beijing West to Daxing Airport?
Use the official 12306 English website or app. Verify your passport before booking, then buy up to 15 days ahead including today; a second-class seat costs CNY 24 to 30 for the 28- to 35-minute run, and you board with the same original passport.
Which airport transfer is best for a photo before sunset?
In Shanghai, the Pudong maglev, because Longyang Road connects to Metro Line 2 and Lujiazui in about 20 more minutes. In Beijing, the Capital Airport Express into Dongzhimen puts you closest to the lit city; the Airport Link Line is the better pick if you land at Hongqiao and need Pudong.
