Chongqing Getting There & Around: Airport, Rail and Metro (2026)

Traveler with a rolling suitcase arriving on a Chongqing metro escalator at dusk, reaching the mountain city by airport train

Chongqing is a mountain city where the airport sits on a metro line and high-speed trains arrive beneath the streets. This 2026 guide covers Jiangbei's Line 10 and K01 shuttle windows, the 12306 passport process and 15-day ticket release, Chengdu rail fares, and the metro, cableway and escalator that carry you between the rivers.

The fastest way into central Chongqing from Jiangbei International is Metro Line 10: about 35 minutes to the center for CNY 7, with trains from 06:30 to 23:00. Choose it unless you land after 23:00 or carry heavy bags, when the CNY 15 K01 airport shuttle or a taxi is simpler.

Jiangbei has two terminals, T2 and T3, and both rail lines are signed in English. Line 10 is the smoother ride: trains every 10 minutes, stopping at T2 and T3 before running south to Chongqing North Railway Station and the center. Line 3 costs CNY 2–9 and runs 06:30–22:30 with trains every 2.5–5 minutes, but its airport stop sits at Terminal 2, so T3 arrivals usually prefer Line 10. If you would rather not drag a suitcase through a transfer, the K01 shuttle leaves the airport from 08:30 until 30 minutes after the last flight lands, and returns from Jiefangbei between 05:30 and 21:00; buses run every 30 minutes and take 65–70 minutes in traffic.

Two more airport buses matter if you are connecting straight to a train. K06 runs to Chongqing West Railway Station between 08:30 and 21:00 in both directions, every 30–50 minutes, for CNY 20; K07 reaches Shapingba Railway Station, with departures from 09:00 to 20:00 and returns from 08:00 to 19:00, every 40–60 minutes, for CNY 15. Taxis queue at official stands outside both terminals. The meter starts at CNY 10 for the first 3 kilometers and adds roughly CNY 2 per kilometer, so expect CNY 60–70 and 30–40 minutes to Jiefangbei, more in the evening rush. DiDi works well if you have Alipay or WeChat Pay set up.

High-speed trains arrive at three different stations, so check your ticket before you book a hotel. Chongqing North has two squares: the South Square connects to Metro Lines 3, 10 and the Loop Line, and the North Square to Lines 4, 10 and the Loop; gates B1–B13 are closer to the South Square and B14–B26 to the North. Chongqing West is served by Line 5 and the Loop Line, and Shapingba by Lines 1, 9 and the Loop. From Chengdu, roughly 150 pairs of G and D trains a day cover the 313–319 kilometers in 1 hour 2 minutes to 3 hours, according to TravelChinaGuide's summer 2026 timetable updated on 7 July 2026, using Chengdu East or South and Chongqing West, North or Shapingba.

Book on China Railway's official 12306 English website or app, not a lookalike. Foreign travelers must complete real-name identity verification before buying: enter your passport details in the app and the system usually verifies you automatically, or upload a photo of the passport information page for manual review; you can also verify in person at a station ticket counter. Tickets generally go on sale 15 days before departure — the rule confirmed by China's 2026 Spring Festival ticket calendar — and popular Chengdu and Xi'an services sell out within minutes on holiday mornings. Pay with a foreign or Chinese bank card, Alipay or WeChat Pay. Your passport is your ticket: scan it at the gate, and keep it with you for inspections on board.

Inside the city, the metro and monorail are the answer. Thirteen lines crisscross Chongqing, fares are distance-based from CNY 2 to CNY 10, and a single-journey ticket or an Alipay/WeChat QR code both work. City buses cost CNY 2 in exact change. The Yangtze River Cableway is transport and sightseeing at once: CNY 30 one way or CNY 50 round trip, running 08:00–22:00 from March to November and 08:00–21:00 in winter. Ride Line 2 past Liziba to watch the monorail slide through an apartment block, take the Crown Escalator at Lianglukou, and use the T480 sightseeing bus when you want Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave and the cableway in one loop.

Time your moves around the crowds. Weekday rush hours, roughly 07:30–09:30 and 17:30–19:30, pack the river crossings, and Hongya Cave's evening crowds make taxis hard to find, so arrive by metro at Xiaoshizi and walk down. If you are continuing to Chengdu, book that leg the day tickets open and read our high-speed rail guide before you choose a station. Photographers should pair this arrival plan with our Chongqing photography spots guide, which covers viewpoints, ticket prices and opening hours across the city. With the airport train, the 12306 app and a transit QR code ready before you land, Chongqing stops feeling like a maze and starts feeling like a city.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Chongqing West Railway Station to the city center?

Take Metro Line 5 and change to Line 1 at Shiqiaopu for Jiefangbei or Hongya Cave; the trip takes about 45–55 minutes and costs CNY 5–6. The Loop Line links West Station with Chongqing North and Shapingba if you are changing trains rather than sightseeing.

Do I need a paper ticket for Chinese high-speed trains?

No. Under real-name e-ticketing your passport is your ticket: scan it at the gate to enter the station and board, and staff may check it during the journey. Bring the same passport you booked with, and request a paper reimbursement receipt only if you need one for expenses.

Can I use Alipay or WeChat Pay on Chongqing's metro?

Yes. Link your card in either app, open the Chongqing public transport QR code and scan it at the gates; station machines also take cash and QR payments. If you will ride often, a 1-day metro pass costs CNY 18, a 3-day pass CNY 45 and a 5-day pass CNY 70, sold at station service counters.

What if my flight lands after midnight?

The metro stops before midnight, but taxis and ride-hailing run all night and add a surcharge after 22:00. Several airport and downtown hotels sell paid pick-ups, and the K01 bus follows the last landing of the night, so check its final departure on arrival before you commit to a taxi.

Is Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport a visa-free transit port?

Yes. China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit covers 57 nationalities arriving at any of 65 open ports, Chongqing included, with a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region (National Immigration Administration, 20 August 2026). Everyone else needs a tourist (L) visa before flying.
