Beijing in three days works only if you keep day one inside the Second Ring and give the Great Wall its own full day. This plan gives the clock times, ticket prices, metro fares and booking windows, then prices the trip before you add a hotel, so you know exactly what to reserve first.

Three days in Beijing is enough for the Forbidden City, a full day at the Mutianyu Great Wall and one hutong evening, provided you sleep inside the Second Ring and book palace tickets seven days ahead. Budget about 700 CNY (US$99) per person for tickets, metro and food.

Here is the shape of a Beijing 3-day itinerary that does not waste a morning. Day one stays inside the Second Ring on the imperial axis, day two goes out to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, and day three trades palaces for the Temple of Heaven, the Lama Temple and a hutong lunch. Beijing is also the northern terminus of the 1,794 km Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, and the hub of a high-speed rail web that reaches Shanghai Hongqiao in about 4 hours 40 minutes, so arrive by train if you can: Beijing South railway station sits on Metro Lines 4 and 14, roughly 25 minutes from Qianmen. Fly in instead and the Capital Airport Express takes 25 minutes and 25 CNY to Dongzhimen. Metro fares run 3-10 CNY a ride, and our guide to buying China high-speed rail tickets on 12306 explains how a passport becomes your ticket.

Day 1, the imperial axis on foot. Reserve the Palace Museum first: tickets are 60 CNY from April to October and 40 CNY from November to March, the museum closes Mondays, and timed slots are released seven days ahead at 8 p.m. Beijing time on the official Palace Museum website and WeChat account. Enter at the Meridian Gate (Wumen), the only public entrance, on the south wall, walk the courtyards north for three to four hours, and leave at Shenwu Gate. Cross the road and climb Jingshan Park (2 CNY) to the Wanchun Pavilion on the summit, where the Forbidden City's golden roofs roll out below you. Our Forbidden City history walk covers those courtyards in order. Book Peking duck for 6 p.m.: a whole bird runs 168-298 CNY and feeds two or three.

Day 2, the Great Wall at Mutianyu. Mutianyu is 70 km northeast of the centre, about 1.5 hours by road, and the ticket is 45 CNY with roughly 120 CNY for the cable car up and toboggan down. Take the first cable car you can, because the restored walkways from Tower 14 to Tower 20 are quiet before 9 a.m. and busy after 10. Badaling is the train option: about 30 minutes from Beijing North railway station, 40 CNY admission and 35 CNY from November to March, with a separate cable car and far bigger crowds. Either section takes a full day once you add the drive and a farmhouse lunch on the way back.

Day 3, temples, hutongs and a last evening. Temple of Heaven park opens at 6 a.m. and the halls at 8 a.m., and the through-ticket is 34 CNY; Tiantan Dongmen station on Line 5 drops you at the east gate, five minutes from the Long Corridor. Ride Line 5 north to Yonghegong for the Lama Temple (25 CNY), then eat zhajiangmian for 18-35 CNY in the lanes around the Drum Tower. Keep a warm evening for the water: the Houhai boats at Shichahai and the canal-side promenades out at Tongzhou are Beijing's version of a river cruise, and both are free to walk.

Two practical notes before you commit. First, October is the best month on paper and the busiest in practice: the National Day holiday runs 1-7 October, when hotel rates inside the Second Ring roughly double, so book eight to ten weeks out or shift to late October. Second, everything on the imperial axis is timed and paperless, so carry your passport, because it is your ticket for the Palace Museum, the National Museum and every 12306 train.

Costs are easy to hold down. Metro 3-10 CNY a ride, a DiDi 28-45 CNY for a 6 km hop, Forbidden City 60 CNY, Jingshan 2 CNY, Temple of Heaven 34 CNY, Lama Temple 25 CNY, Mutianyu 45 CNY plus the cable car, and meals from 60 CNY a day to 200 CNY once you add duck. Tickets, transport and food land near 700-1,100 CNY (US$99-155) per person for the three days before hotels, and our Beijing budget guide prices that whole trip by tier.

Your next step: open 12306 and book your arrival train before you book anything else, then set a phone reminder for 8 p.m. Beijing time, seven days before your palace day, to claim a Forbidden City slot. Our Beijing travel guide covers districts, seasons and where to stay, and if you are folding this Beijing 3-day itinerary into a longer rail trip, the high-speed rail and river journeys theme page collects the train and canal routes that connect it to Shanghai, Xi'an and Hangzhou.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Beijing?

Yes. Three days covers the Forbidden City and Jingshan on day one, a full Great Wall day at Mutianyu on day two, and the Temple of Heaven, Lama Temple and a hutong lunch on day three. Add a fourth day only if you want the Summer Palace or a museum half-day.

How much does a 3-day trip to Beijing cost?

Beyond hotels, plan on about 700-1,100 CNY (US$99-155) per person for three days of tickets, metro, taxis and food. Hotels inside the Second Ring start near 350 CNY a night for a three-star room and roughly double during the 1-7 October National Day holiday.

Which Great Wall section should I visit on a 3-day trip?

Mutianyu is the best fit: 45 CNY admission plus about 120 CNY for the cable car, roughly 1.5 hours by road, and quieter than Badaling before 9 a.m. Badaling is the train option, about 30 minutes from Beijing North railway station, but far more crowded.

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Beijing in 2026?

For a normal holiday, yes: US passports need a Chinese tourist visa from the official China Visa Application Service Center. If you are flying through Beijing Capital or Daxing on to a third country with a confirmed onward ticket, you may qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit instead.

How far ahead should I book Forbidden City tickets?

Timed slots are released seven days ahead at 8 p.m. Beijing time on the Palace Museum's official website and WeChat account, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Weekend and October slots sell out within minutes, so set a reminder and have your passport number ready.
