China's price tags move with the calendar more than most travelers expect. A room that feels like a bargain in early December can double during Golden Week, and one holiday date can decide whether your train sells out. This month-by-month guide prices 2026 by tier - hotels, meals, tickets, transport and guides - so you can choose a window that fits your budget and your patience.

Visit in the second half of April, May before the holiday, or mid-September to October 2026: those shoulder weeks bring mild weather, open sights and room rates well below the Spring Festival (February 15-23) and National Day (October 1-7) peaks. Three days run about CNY 880 (USD 130) budget, CNY 3,550 (USD 520) mid-range, CNY 8,000 (USD 1,175) private.

The rule is simple: national festivals set the floor for crowds and the ceiling for prices. In 2026 the State Council's official calendar gives Qingming April 4-6, Labor Day May 1-5, Dragon Boat June 19-21 and Mid-Autumn September 25-27, and each one briefly empties offices and fills every train. The China Hotel Association's consumer index for the first half of 2026 found the year's room-price peak in February and a second spike in May, with rates drifting gently upward after that.

Month by month, the country divides into zones. January-February: Harbin's ice city and the northeast run near minus 20C, Beijing sits around minus 8 to 2C and is at its cheapest outside the Spring Festival holiday, and Yunnan and Sanya stay mild. March-May: blossoms open in Beijing and Nanjing, Yunnan's terraces turn green, and temperatures are at their most comfortable before the May break. June-August: plum rains soak Shanghai and Hangzhou, the south pushes past 35C, and typhoons brush the southeast coast, while the Tibetan plateau and the northern grasslands are at their best. September-November: dry, clear air, golden larch and the finest mountain light - also the busiest weeks of the year. December: cold, quiet and cheap, with Harbin's ice lights the one crowded exception.

Lodging sets your tier. In 2026 a hostel dorm bed runs CNY 60-120 a night, a clean budget twin CNY 180-320, a comfortable four-star room CNY 500-700, and a five-star room CNY 900-1,800. Holiday weeks can add 50-100 percent in the big cities, and the four-star middle is where demand and prices have risen fastest. Book six to eight weeks ahead for spring and autumn, and earlier for any national holiday.

Food is inexpensive almost everywhere. A street breakfast of baozi and soy milk costs CNY 10-20, a bowl of noodles or dumplings CNY 15-30, and dinner at a mid-range restaurant CNY 60-150 per person. Eat local and you can manage on CNY 80-120 a day; add a good dinner and coffee and the figure rises to CNY 200-300. Tipping is not expected, and nearly every restaurant takes Alipay or WeChat Pay.

Tickets stay modest, but you must book them. The Palace Museum charges CNY 60 from April 1 to October 31 and CNY 40 from November 1 to March 31, with the Treasure Gallery adding CNY 10; it opens 8:30-17:00 with last entry at 16:00 in peak season and 8:30-16:30 with last entry at 15:30 in winter, closes Mondays except public holidays, and sells no same-day tickets - book through the official WeChat mini program. At Mutianyu the wall ticket is CNY 45, the shuttle CNY 15, and the cable car CNY 100 one-way or CNY 140 round-trip; tour shuttles from Dongzhimen leave at 8:00 and 10:00, Qianmen departures roll from 7:00 to 11:00, and returns run 13:00 to 16:00. In summer the wall stays open until 19:30, with the last ticket check at 19:00.

Transport is where China rewards planning. TravelChinaGuide's Beijing-Shanghai timetable, updated July 7, 2026, lists about 46 G trains a day from Beijing South to Shanghai Hongqiao covering 1,318 kilometers in 4.5 to 7.5 hours, second class CNY 576-697. The same site's Beijing-Xi'an page puts that 1,216-kilometer run at 4 to 6 hours and CNY 480-593, and trainspread's Shanghai-Hangzhou schedule of February 26, 2026 shows a 45-to-90-minute hop for CNY 32-92.5. Book on 12306 with your passport: standard sales open 15 days ahead, while the Beijing-Shanghai reservation pilot allows booking 17 to 30 days out. Carry the same passport you booked with - it is your ticket at the gate.

Guides are the line travelers underestimate. English-speaking guides in Beijing cost CNY 1,000-1,200 a day in the 2026 high season, and international directories quote USD 120-200 for a half day and USD 200-400 for a full day, usually per group, with tickets and cars billed separately; rare languages reach CNY 2,500. The three-day sample above breaks down per person, sharing a twin: on a budget, CNY 180 for two hostel nights, CNY 330 of street food, CNY 40 of metro and CNY 245 in tickets; mid-range, CNY 1,300 for a four-star twin, CNY 780 of meals, CNY 350 of metro and taxis, CNY 445 in tickets and a CNY 500 share of one guided day; private, CNY 3,600 for two five-star nights, CNY 1,500 of dining, CNY 800 each for a private car, CNY 700 in tickets and CNY 1,100 each for two guide days. Peak-week dates reprice the list.

Pay the way China now works. Alipay and WeChat Pay linked to a foreign Visa or Mastercard cover hotels, ticket windows, metro gates and noodle shops, so keep only a small cash float for village stalls. Then choose your window deliberately: shoulder weeks for value and light, deep winter for empty museums and low rates, early autumn for mountain color. Tell ChinaMira your dates, budget tier and must-see list, and a travel designer will price the trip line by line - rooms, trains, tickets and the guide days actually worth paying for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest month to visit China?

Late November through early March, outside the February holiday fortnight, is when rooms and flights fall to their yearly lows. Winter is harsh in the north but mild in Yunnan and on Hainan, so the cheapest month depends on which China you want to see.

How much should I budget per day in China?

Once your room is paid for, most travelers spend modestly: street food, metro fares and a paid attraction rarely add up to much, while a guide or a private car is the line that changes everything. The fact sheet lists the 2026 daily bands by tier.

Do I need cash in China, or can I use my US credit card?

Alipay and WeChat Pay linked to a foreign Visa or Mastercard handle almost every payment, from hotels to metro gates. Keep a small float of yuan for rural stalls and small temples, and carry your passport, since some ticket desks still ask for it.

When should I book train tickets for a China trip?

Book the moment your travel dates are fixed, especially for spring, autumn and any national holiday. Register on 12306 with your passport before sales open, verify your identity, and have a backup train in mind; the fact sheet explains the current advance windows.

Is China expensive compared with Japan or Europe?

Not for the basics: hotels, high-speed trains and everyday restaurant meals usually cost less than their equivalents in Japan or Western Europe, and many of the best experiences, from city parks to the Bund, are free or nearly free. Costs climb with private guides, five-star rooms and last-minute holiday travel.
