Huanglong's Travertine Pools: 3,400 Terraces and the Best Months to Visit

Huanglong is a 3.6-kilometer valley of calcite terraces in Sichuan's Minshan Mountains, where snowmelt builds more than 3,400 travertine pools between 3,100 and 3,576 meters. This practical, story-driven guide covers the geology, Five-Color Pond at the valley head, the golden travertine beach, ticket prices, altitude advice, the best months and how the 2024 high-speed rail link changed access.
Huanglong's travertine pools are more than 3,400 terraced basins of calcite-rich water strung down a 3.6-kilometer valley in Songpan County, Sichuan. They exist because snowmelt from 5,588-meter Xuebaoding dissolves limestone, then drops its calcite as it cools. Go in late September or October; peak admission is CNY 170 from June 1 to December 15, CNY 60 in winter.
The site is protected as the Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area in Songpan County, in the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, about 370 kilometers north-northwest of Chengdu. UNESCO inscribed it in 1992, citing travertine formations, waterfalls and limestone scenery that rank among the world's outstanding examples, and the protected zone covers 60,000 hectares. Locals call the valley the Yellow Dragon because the golden calcite shelf winds downhill like a sleeping dragon's spine, and that shape is what you follow on foot.
Travertine is limestone's patient work. Snowmelt from Mount Xuebaoding, at 5,588 meters the highest peak in the Minshan range, seeps through carbonate rock and picks up dissolved calcium bicarbonate. When that water reaches the open air, pressure drops and temperature shifts, so the mineral settles out in thin calcite skins. Over thousands of years the skins built lips, dams and basins, and the water held behind them became the pools. Color is a collaboration: the calcite itself is pale gold, algae and water plants tint the shallows green, and light bending off the mineral floor deepens the water to turquoise. Park literature counts more than 3,400 pools in the valley, and UNESCO rates the travertine terraces here among the three most outstanding examples on earth.
Most of those pools collect at the top. Five-Color Pond, or Wucai Chi, sits at 3,576 meters and spreads across 21,000 square meters; it alone holds 693 basins, layered like the steps of an amphitheater and rimmed in white and gold. It is the largest and highest open travertine pool group in the world. Beside it stands Huanglong Ancient Temple, a Ming-dynasty shrine of gray timber and tile, more than 600 years old, which fills each summer for the Huanglong Temple Fair, when Tibetan, Qiang and Han pilgrims climb to burn incense. Look south from the upper platform and the pools fall away toward the snow peak of Xuebaoding, holding the mountain upside down on a still morning.
The classic route takes the cable car up and walks down, which is the right way round at this altitude. Buy the upbound cable car ticket (CNY 80 in peak season, CNY 50 from November 16 to March 31), ride to the upper station, then take the electric shuttle (CNY 20) or walk about 800 meters to Five-Color Pond. From there a boardwalk descends the valley for roughly 3.5 kilometers past a sequence of named pools: Zhengyan, Mingjing, Suoluoying, Penjing and Yingbin among them. Allow four to five hours at an easy pace, including stops, and save your legs for the descent.
Near the bottom, the water is no longer pooled but spread. Jinsha Pudi, the Golden Sand Beach, is a sloping shelf of rippled yellow travertine 1,300 meters long and 40 to 122 meters wide, recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest, longest and most colorful surface travertine beach on earth. There are no basins here; mineral water simply sheets across the slope, laying down layers that gleam gold in direct midday sun. The boardwalk crosses it high and dry, and the crowds thin out, so it is a good place to slow down near the end of the walk.
Altitude is the real test, not distance. The gate sits at about 3,100 meters and the upper pools near 3,600, high enough that some visitors feel headachy or short of breath. Riding up and walking down avoids the hardest exertion; drink water, eat lightly, move slowly, and turn back if you feel unwell. Small oxygen canisters are sold in the park for CNY 20 to 30, and hotels in Songpan or Huanglong town let you sleep at altitude the night before. Travelers with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor first, and everyone should treat the boardwalk as a mountain trail rather than a city park.
Aim for late September and October, when rain eases, the pools settle clear and the larch, spruce and maple turn gold and crimson. April and May are pleasant but the pools can run low after the dry winter. Winter is quiet and cheap, with entrance at CNY 60 from December 16 to May 31, though ice can pause cable car service. The park opens around 8:00 and the last entry is mid-afternoon; tickets are sold by real name with your passport, and in October the published daily cap of 25,000 visitors can sell out, so reserve seven to ten days ahead through the official Aba tourism platform.
Reaching Huanglong became much easier in 2024, when the Sichuan-Qinghai high-speed railway opened its Zhenjiangguan to Huangshengguan section and brought trains to Huanglongjiuzhai station: about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours from Chengdu East, with second-class seats at CNY 128 to 148. From the station, express shuttles reach the park gate in about 30 minutes for CNY 20, and taxis cost CNY 80 to 100. Travelers flying in use Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport, 3,448 meters above sea level and roughly 43 to 53 kilometers away, with a 45-minute airport bus at CNY 28. Neighboring Jiuzhaigou is another 120 to 140 kilometers, so most itineraries pair the two valleys. Tell a ChinaMira travel designer your dates, and we will time the rail leg, secure the passport-linked tickets and shape the valley walk around your pace.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Huanglong's travertine pools?
Late September and October are the best months, when rainfall eases, the pool water settles clear and the surrounding forest turns gold and crimson. April and May are milder and quieter but the pools can run low, while from December 16 to March 31 entrance drops to CNY 60 and snow and ice can pause the cable car.
How much does a Huanglong visit cost?
Peak-season entrance is CNY 170 from June 1 to December 15 and CNY 60 from December 16 to May 31, booked by real name with your passport. Add CNY 80 for the upbound cable car (CNY 50 in winter), CNY 40 down, CNY 20 for the electric shuttle and CNY 20 to 30 for an oxygen canister if you want one.
How do I get to Huanglong from Chengdu?
Trains run from Chengdu East to Huanglongjiuzhai station in about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, with second-class seats at CNY 128 to 148; the station opened to passengers in August 2024. From there, express shuttles reach the park gate in roughly 30 minutes for CNY 20, or a taxi costs CNY 80 to 100.
How long does the Huanglong walk take, and is it difficult?
Allow four to five hours for the standard route: cable car up (CNY 80), a short shuttle ride or 800-meter walk to Five-Color Pond at 3,576 meters, then a 3.5-kilometer boardwalk descent. The walking is mostly downhill, but the altitude, from 3,100 meters at the gate, makes it harder than the distance suggests, so go slowly.
Can I combine Huanglong with Jiuzhaigou in one trip?
Yes, and most travelers do: neighboring Jiuzhaigou is 120 to 140 kilometers away, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours by road from Huanglong, so a two-day pairing works well. Base yourself in Songpan or Huanglong town, see Huanglong early in the morning, then continue to Jiuzhaigou for a full day.
